Best Inshore Lures for Redfish and Snook in Florida

Best Inshore Lures for Redfish and Snook in Florida

Florida's inshore flats, mangroves, passes and surf hold some of the best light-tackle fishing in the country. Redfish, snook, seatrout and jacks will all eat a well-placed artificial. Here are the DUO saltwater lures we would put in a Florida inshore box, and when to throw each one.

Topwater: Realis Pencil 65 SW

Few things beat a topwater blow-up from a snook or a big trout at first light. The Realis Pencil 65 SW is a compact saltwater walking pencil that is easy to cast on spinning gear and small enough for fish feeding on glass minnows and small baitfish. Walk it over grass flats, along mangrove edges and around dock lights.

When to throw it: early morning, late evening and calm water.

Sinking minnow: Spearhead Ryuki 110S SW

When the wind picks up or fish sit deeper in passes and channels, you need a bait that casts far and gets down. The Spearhead Ryuki 110S SW is the saltwater edition of the Ryuki 110S, with a flat-body design and a 21g fixed-weight build that casts a long way and sinks into the strike zone. Count it down, then twitch and retrieve.

When to throw it: passes, inlets, bridges and windy days.

Saltwater jerkbaits: Realis Jerkbait 120S SW and 100DRS SW

A twitch-and-pause jerkbait is deadly on snook and trout holding on structure. The Realis Jerkbait 120S SW gives you a bigger profile for larger baitfish, while the 100DRS SW runs deeper along edges and drop-offs.

When to throw them: mangrove shorelines, seawalls, docks and channel edges.

Bigger baits for the beach: Tide Minnow Ghost 150F and Rough Trail Maki Flat 155F

Snook cruising the beach in summer and big fish around inlets will eat a larger bait. The Tide Minnow Ghost 150F is DUO's flagship surf minnow, strong-bodied and quick to respond in heavy water. The Rough Trail Maki Flat 155F is a floating flat-sided jerkbait that throws a lot of flash, ideal when big baitfish are around.

When to throw them: beach snook, inlets and areas holding large bait such as mullet.

Quick tips for Florida inshore

  • Fish the tide. Moving water is everything. Plan around the first few hours of the incoming or outgoing tide.
  • Use a fluorocarbon leader. Around 20–30 lb for redfish and trout, heavier around mangroves and structure for snook.
  • Match the bait size. Small baits when glass minnows and pilchards are around, bigger baits when mullet are running.
  • Rinse your lures with fresh water after every trip to keep hooks and split rings in good shape.
  • Check the rules. Florida has seasons, slot limits and closures for snook, redfish and trout. Always check the current FWC regulations before you keep a fish.
